The course is an introduction to CLTS (Children’s Literature Translation Studies). Students will examine a wide variety of materials and analyze the contemporary French literature for children translated to Polish language (and some of Polish literature for children translated to French). Students will work on translating contemporary French literaturefor children which hasn't been translated and published in Poland yet.

The class is an introduction to literary translation with particular emphasis on the specifics of translating children's literature. The reading of theoretical texts introducing the field of Children's Literature Translation Studies will be accompanied by a critical analysis of translations of French-language children's literature into Polish and Polish literature into French (to a lesser extent).

The following topics will be discussed in the first semester:

- CLTS as a research field

- specifics of children's literature (genres, characteristics, the most famous French-language authors)

- specifics of translation of children's literature - between the expectations of the publisher and the reader

- polemical translation and translation series

- different translation strategies: from domestication to exoticization

- the role of the translator: translator as an intermediary between the text and the reader/translator as a second author in translation

- adaptations

Students will also make independent attempts to translate texts not yet published on the Polish market - French children's literature.

- A student knows the basic issues connected with the field of CLTS (Children Literature Translation Studies) and the problems characteristic of this specific kind of translation (K_W02)

- Students are familiar with contemporary children's literature (mainly French and Polish), they are familiar with French texts for children translated into Polish

- Students are able to critically evaluate translation (from Polish into French and from French into Polish)

- Student is more proficient in translating excerpts from children's literature, is aware of the challenges faced by a translator, understands what the process of publishing children's books is about (cooperation between author, translator and publisher)

- knows to an advanced degree grammatical, orthographic, lexical, semantic, phonological and stylistic issues in French (K_W08)

- knows to an advanced degree the principles of analysis and interpretation of texts belonging to different functional styles of the French language (K_W09)

- attendance and active participation in class (knowledge of texts, participation in discussions, accounting for individual and group homework assignments - 40% of the grade)

- independent selected book (from French into Polish - 30% of the grade)

- test of knowledge of theoretical issues - (30% of the grade) - stationary or remote, depending on the epidemic situation.

I allow you to be unprepared for class twice.

Those who fail to complete homework more than two times or do not actively participate in class will have to do additional work. Being unprepared for class three times / not participating in the discussion is equivalent to not passing the class.
