ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 3.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Prerequisites (description):

A good basis for participating in this course would be a knowledge of basic concepts from the fields of poetics, literary theory and linguistics. However, this is not required. The linguistic sensitivity and intellectual culture which characterizes students of Warsaw University will suffice.

Short description:

The class will be devoted to the analysis and interpretation of Polish poems selected by the course instructor and participants. It is addressed to students (not only from language studies departments) who find pleasure in reading poetry and at the same time wish to develop their sensitivity and analytical and interpretative skills.

Full description:

The course will be devoted to the analysis and interpretation of select Polish poems. It is aimed at students who not only enjoy reading poetry, but also wish to develop their sensitivity and their analytical or interpretative skills. The course will have a practical nature. Each meeting will be dedicated to the analysis and interpretation of another Polish poem. Particular emphasis will be placed on the linguistic aspects of the relevant texts.

Learning outcomes:

After finishing the subject student:

- Knows basic concepts and categories from the field of poetics

- Distinguishes the analysis of a text from its interpretation

- Knows which linguistic means serve as the sound laye and semantic organization of an artistic text

- Understands how the poetic function differs from other functions of the speech act

- Reads artistic texts with pleasure and understanding

- Sees the differences between different levels of poetic utterance

- Undertakes independent analysis and interpretation of a variety of poems

- Knows how to carefully and actively listen to others

- Follows, with understanding, the train of thought of communication partners

- Selects and organizes information obtained in the process of communication

- Knows how to join a discussion, interacts with others with the goal of achieving desired communication results

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Attendance, active class participation, term paper consiting of analysis and interpretation of a freely selected poem.
