ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 3.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;

Short description:

The course focuses on discussing historical evolution and regional differentiation of perceptions and representations of the West in Arabic

culture and their implication for intercultural dialogue.

Full description:

The course focuses on discussing historical evolution and regional differentiation of perceptions and representations of the West in Arabic

culture through reading excerpts from Arabic classical and modern literature in Polish or English translation, as well as studying the Arabic

popular culture. The basic Western concepts and theories of describing the alterity will be compared with the Arabic and Islamic tradition

and their implications for intercultural dialogue will be discussed.

Student:

K_W16: demonstrates basic grasp of contemporary cultural life of Arab countries

K_U04: is able to use the knowledge of history of Arab countries to analyze and interpret events taking place in the modern world

K_U06: is able to read, analyze and interpret literary texts and other works of culture (film, press, social writing) and appropriately place them in their cultural context

K_U10: can indicate most important intellectual problems, dilemmas, aesthetic preferences taking shape inside the culture of Arab countries

K_K03: is prepared to establish relations and cooperate with representatives of other cultures

K_K05: is prepared to make others aware of the cultural distinctness and its religious, philosophical, traditional and historical roots and its significance for understanding modern world

K_K06: sees the need of dialogue between cultures

K_K07: is aware of significance the culture of Arab countries have for the culture of the world

K_K08: acts in aid of sharing and promoting cultural and linguistic heritage of Arab countries

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Control of attendance. Max. two absences (4 hours) are allowed in a semester. In case of absence due to illness, a medical certificate should be submitted within seven working days from the last day of the leave specified in the certificate.
