Full description:

The classes provide knowledge and skills in the field of mass communication and selected forms of popular culture in Asian and African countries. The curriculum of classes includes the basics of media theory and research approaches related to popular culture, as well, as the diversity of its forms and areas of functioning.

The first three classes will have the character of a theoretical introduction to contemporary reflection on media and its classical foundations. The starting point will be McLuhanowska, a broad definition of the medium as a culturally organized means of communication and expression, and the subject of reflection will be both traditional media that participate (based on Bolter's remediation) in contemporary multimedia and intermedial cultural reality, as well as new media. The theoretical part will be illustrated with texts that draw attention to the differences between non-Western and Western uses and ways of media processing (Karin Barber, Junzo Kawada, Maurice Bloch, John Fiske, Bill Osgerby). Also selected areas of popular culture will be analyzed (film, cinema, music, television, Internet, computer games, comics) and their transformations.

The remaining classes will be devoted to various manifestations of the media and forms of popular culture in Asian and African countries and the following issues will be analyzed:

1) The media system in the countries of Asia and Africa, the degree of mediatization of societies, the legal system regulating the functioning of the media, censorship and the freedom of speech

2) Characteristics of printed media (newspapers, magazines and books), audio and audiovisual media (radio, television, film) and new media (electronic publications on CD-ROM, DVD, digital interactive TV (VOD), internet) in Asian and African countries

3) Discussion of selected forms of popular culture in Asia and Africa: film, comics, animated series, video games, popular music

4) Analysis of selected issues prevailing in various popular culture texts: subjectivity and cultural identity, national identity, ethnicity and race, gender and its representations, passive recipient and active participation, creativity and imitation, seriality and repetition in popular culture, cultural tourism
