Short description:

Classes are organized under the Integrated Action Program for the Development of the University of Warsaw, co-financed from the European Social Fund under PO WER, path 3.5.

Workshop is devoted to the issues of garment and jewellery considered as carriers of culture and elements of communication, as well as a system of signs defining social, cultural and political identity.

Full description:

The workshop focuses on the issues of garment and jewellery, considered as a carrier of culture and a system of signs defining social, cultural and political identity in selected countries of the Middle East, Maghreb and Central Asia. The aim of the workshop is to provide knowledge about clothing in selected Muslim countries, its function and role in building cultural identity, which will allow to acquire the ability to communicate fruitfully in relations with representatives of other cultures and establish a relationship in a multicultural environment. During the workshop, such issues as the communication function of clothing, its symbolism, its presence in pop culture and other roles of clothing in selected cultures within the Islamic world will be discussed. The workshop will answer the following questions: how does clothing affect the perception of the person wearing it? what symbolic elements can we find in it? what other cultural functions does it still perform? Students will learn about clothing traditions in different regions of Asia and Africa in order to acquire the ability to move around in a multicultural area and use this knowledge in professional life, in business, diplomatic or other professions that require contact with representatives of other cultures.

Learning outcomes:

Knowledge: graduate

- has a knowledge of selected issues related to traditional clothing in the cultures of the Middle East, Maghreb and Central Asia and its significance in different regions of the Islamic world

- knows different types of costumes and ethnic jewellery, is able to recognize the main techniques and symbols of ornamental motifs typical of the aesthetics of selected Islamic countries

- has basic knowledge of the social, cultural and political context of selected clothing elements in Islamic countries and the function of clothing as part of the diversity of communication between the countries of the Middle East, the Maghreb and Central Asia

Skills: student

- can evaluate and explain the most important products of selected cultures in the context of clothing and jewellery

- can identify who applying the knowledge on clothing/jewellery can be used in establishing and maintaining professional contacts in a multicultural environment

- is able to identify main sources of cultural inspiration and borrowings.

Competences: student

- is open to new ideas related to cultural diversity in the business sphere, in the non-governmental sector and in the international academic community

- is aware of the cultural diversity concerning its sources and its importance for the modern world.

- understands and appreciates the value of tradition and cultural heritage, its own and the countries of other cultural circles, particularly in terms of traditional dress and its varied functions

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Assessment based on the student's preparation for the classes (according to previously given guidelines), attendance, active participation in classes and own work (project preparation)
