Short description:

The subject includes the presentation of the basic components of the cultural heritage of the Polish-Lithuanian Tatar community, its specificity against the background of the Islamic world and links with the culture of the old Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth

Full description:

The subject includes the following basic components of the Polish-Lithuanian Tatars' cultural heritage: mosque architecture - cemeteries and epigraphy - ornamentation - language - manuscripts and their content - connections between Polish-Tatar literature with the Muslim Orient and Christian tradition - devotional practices and other religious rituals - magical practices.

Learning outcomes:

After completing the course and confirming the achievement of learning outcomes, the student is able to:

Characterize the social, cultural and linguistic situation of the Polish-Tatar community in the context of its history

Explain the genesis of the Tatar settlement in the Commonwealth, describe its further history and the current situation, including its distribution.

Understand the rules of writing and reading Polish-Tatar texts, be able to read simple and short entries in Polish.

Identify the types of Polish-Tatar manuscripts and characterize the content of Polish-Tatar literature

Describe the relationship between Polish-Tatar literature and Old Polish literature as well as oriental (Muslim) literature

To know the basics of dogmatism and worship of Islam, to know the most important elements of Polish-Lithuanian Tatar rituals and to understand their specificity in the context of general-Muslim rituals.

Identify forms and monuments of Tatar architecture in the lands of the Commonwealth and understand their genesis and functions.

Understand the features of the interior and mosque equipment of the Polish-Lithuanian Tatars.

Identify forms of sepulchral culture of Polish-Lithuanian Tatars (cemeteries, grave forms, inscriptions) and their genesis and specific features in the context of Islamic culture and Polish culture.
