Anthropology of Ethnicity and Nationalism 2

Classes are intended for students of humanities such as ethnology or cultural studies, as well as all other university students. In addition to the basic ability to analyze texts in the field of humanities, participants do not need to have any special competences.

Classroom

The aim of the course will be to analyze the basic concepts of the discipline such as ethnicity, ethnos, ethnogenesis, nationalism, imagined community, or invented tradition. The relationship between ethnic / national and confessional identity will also be addressed. Anthropological approaches to research on identity issues will be presented in both European and non-European communities.

1. American cultural anthropology and the study of ethnicity. Ethnic Indians of North America. From H.L. Morgan to Franz Boas.

2. Cultural patterns by Ruth Benedict: the traditional culture of Zuni, Dobu and Kwakiutl.

3. Chrysanthemum and the Sword - Ruth Benedict on Japanese culture.

4. Stereotypes and national identity. National cultures at their roots by Antonina Kłoskowska.

5. The evolution of research on nation and nationalism in the twentieth century: from Emile Durkheim and Max Weber to Hans Kohn, Karl Deutsch and Eli Kedourie.

6. The "classic modernism": Ernest Gellner’s theory of nation and nationalism.

7. Eric Hobsbawm and the concept of invented traditions.

8. Benedict Anderson: Imagined communities.

9. Ethno-symbolism and work of Anthony D. Smith.

10. Herfried Münkler and the myths of the Germans in anthropological perspective.

11. Ethno-nationalism in Europe: casus of the Balkans.

12. Eurocentric concept of the nation and the non-European perceptions of the community. World of Islam: between tribal identity, millet and ummah.

13. From millets system in the Ottoman Empire to the modern, "national" Republic of Turkey.

14. The issue of collective identity in the Muslim communities of Central Asia and Afghanistan.

15. Summary and conclusions.

K_W05 has detailed and organized knowledge of anthropological literature and studies on nationalism; can name and characterize most important phenomena/trends/literary texts/writings.

K_W10 can name and characterize basic cultural phenomena studied by anthropology of ethnicity and nationalism.

K_U03 can use the basic terminology from the domain of ethnology, anthropology of ethnicity and anthropology of nationalism.

K_U04 can use anthropology of ethnicity to analyze and interpret events taking place in the modern world.
