Short description:

The aim of the course is to provide a broad and comprehensive review of topics related to the history of ideas and culture in the orbit of the Iberian Peninsula from the Middle Ages to the end of the seventeenth century, taking into account the emerging colonial relations, migration phenomena and multiculturalism. We will try to show the history of the western part of the Mediterranean area as a response to the wider phenomena of medieval and early modern Europe. The key place in the classes will be given to literature and visual arts approached from the perspective of cultural studies: as social artefacts that are a reflection and, at the same time, a place of negotiation of key currents and thoughts for a given community. We will also deal with the intrinsic cultural complexity of Spain (the distinctiveness of Catalonia, the Basque country, Galicia and Valencia).

Full description:

The lecture deals with the cultural complexity of the Iberian world from the 8th to the 17th century. It considers the coexistence of the three monotheistic communities on the Iberian Peninsula, their interactions and mutual relations. It also focuses on the ideas about state and nationhood, as well as the reception of the ancient tradition. Important place is also given to the notions of the imagined structure of the space and time in which moved and imagined himself the man of Iberian Middle Ages and the first modern times. The course will pay special attention to the circulation of artistic forms and motives, as well as the achievements of thinkers representing all three monotheistic religious communities of the Iberian Peninsula, such as Ramon Lull, Ibn Chaldun, Averroes, Maimonides. Finally, the reasons for the breakup of this complex world of Iberia, the circumstances and consequences of the victory of Christianity.
