Short description:

Madness in Italian literature of the 20th century;madness as a psychiatric and literary question.

Full description:

The greatest revolution in psychiatry happened in the 20th century. It was Italy, where two main arguments supporting the hypothesis happened: the invention of electric shock therapy in 1938 and the Basaglia Low of 1978 closing the psychiatric hospitals. Various methods of madness treatment were also reflected by its various concepts as well as different ways, in which lunatics were perceived by the society.

We will follow “literary history” of madness: in the form of identity loss, mask, getaway or poetical resistance

against the signs of mental illness stigma.
