Short description:

The aim of the course is to make students acquainted with the processes of metropolisation taking place in different spatial scales (from global, through national, regional, and ending in inner-city scale). As a result of the lecture student should understand the concept of metropolisation and should be able to use this to explain the phenomena and processes taking place in contemporary socio-economic space.

Full description:

The lecture is to familiarize students with the processes of metropolisation taking place at various spatial scales. The lecture will be divided into five thematic blocks. The first block will concern the functioning of cities on a global and national scale. In particular, the characteristics of the global city as well as the metropolitan network will be presented, including the economic processes shaping it and the impact of metropolisation processes on the national settlement systems. The second block will be devoted to the formation of urban regions, indicating their stages and the most important manifestations at various scales, i.e. the city center (gentrification), suburban zones (suburbanization) and regional hinterland (extraterritorialization). The third block will focus on the spatial structure and its changes, including those related to the socio-spatial diversity on an urban scale (closed estates), the concept of new cities in the suburbs and the separation of metropolises from the regional hinterland. In the fourth block, the spatial dimension of the sectoral approach to metropolitan development will be presented in the form of a creative city, new housing spaces, new consumption spaces, and the changing role of transport systems. The last part will deal with urban and metropolitan policy. In particular, the main actors of the "city game" will be presented, and the issue of managing metropolitan areas will be discussed on the example of a multiplayer game.
