ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 3.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Short description:

The lecture aims to familiarize students with the problems of development theories, including regional development, and their practical use in programming the development of regions and cities.

Full description:

The lecture aims to familiarize students with:

1. Contemporary development mechanisms in a broader historic framework.

2. Territorial differentiations on the global, European and Polish scales, in a dynamic context.

3. The theoretical foundations for explaining development processes, in particular of the territorial systems.

4. The problems of practical applications of theories of spatial, and regional development in planning and programming the development of regions and urban units.

Learning outcomes:

Knowledge

1) Understand the mechanisms of development of countries and regions (K_W01). (2) Knows basic theories of regional and spatial development (K_W09). (3) Explains interdisciplinary nature of theoretical concepts in the field of urban and regional studies and spatial planning. (K_W01). (4) Defines basic concepts related to theories of regional and spatial development (K_W09). (5) Knows the principles of building a regional and urban strategies (K_W01)

Abilities and skills

(1) Evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of theories, concepts and methods of spatial development and spatial planning in relation to the specific research problems. (K_U06) (2) Indicates the theories and the concepts appropriate to examine the fundamental problems of the spatial development and spatial planning. (K_U06) (3) Critically analyses and interprets information, including those presented using maps and charts. (K_U08) (4) Can synthetically present an analysis of the problem and the recommendations of the solutions on the issues of the spatial development and spatial planning. (K_U08)

Social skills

(1) Independently perfects the skills of preparing the written statements. (K_K01) (2) Independently broadens knowledge of spatial development and spatial planning using their interdisciplinary character.(K_K07).

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

70%: written exam (10 short questions for 2 points each, 1 descriptive question for 10 points)

30%: participation during lectures
