Brief description

The lecture dynamically presents the history of mathematical ideas and thinking. The focus is on relations between mathematics and the course of political and social history, civilisation, culture and the entirety of science. The scope of the lecture ranges between the neolithic revolution up to our times. In principle, mathematical knowledge at school level is sufficient to follow the course. Brief description

Nowadays, mathematics plays an increasingly important role in understanding natural and social processes, becoming the main instrument for understanding the world. We are observiing the exciting process of mathematics entering biology, medicine, economics, sociology, and even the arts. It is worth to understand why this is happening and realizing the successes of this process (failures too). On the other hand, mathematics is sometimes separated from the humanities as if it were not an equivalent part of culture. It is worth looking at it and finding connections: "fill the trenches". In particular, contemplating the numerous connections between mathematics and literature. The lecture is intended for everyone who is open to mathematics, especially applied mathematics. However, it is hardly recommended for Mathematics students: it is quite elementary from the point of view of mathematics itself. In particular, no knowledge of modern university mathematics is required.
