Summer semester 2023/24

• Lecture - 30 hours

A series of lectures presenting selected issues in the field of health and health protec-tion "in a nutshell", especially those with which a psychologist will inevitably come into con-tact at work, incl. genetically conditioned diseases, chronic non-communicable diseases (commonly called civilization diseases), neoplastic diseases, emotional disorders. The aim is to prepare for work with a patient whose problems may be a consequence of a somatic disease or be related to his health.

Adolescence is the important long period in human life. This is the transition from childhood to adulthood, which brings both chances and threats (including intra- and interpersonal conflicts). The main aim of this course is to broaden your knowledge of normative adolescence.

The lecture program includes the presentation of the history of behavior genetics, its location among other disciplines, basic theoretical assumptions and methods of the study of genetic and environmental determinants of differences between individuals in terms of personality, abilities and psychopathology.

The course will have a format of a lecture with elements of multimedia presentations and small group discussions. In his lectures the instructor will refer to his long experience of working with culturally diversified communities, as well as to his long experience in teaching psychology. Students must devote at least 78 hours of work (participation in lectures 30 hours, required readings 13 hours, weekly written assignments 13 hours, final written assignment summarizing the course 10 hours, preparation for final exam 10 hours, final exam 2 hours).To almost each lecture there a required reading available on the internet is assigned. Based on each position of the readings, and on the content of the relevantlecture, students are expected to write a short (one page long) assignment, that must be submitted at the beginning of the next lecture. The course ends with the final written exam, and the final written assignment.

The course is a selection of issues from criminology, victimology and penology, introducing psychologists to the specificity of work in juridical system. The main emphasis, in addition to familiarizing students with basic theoretical issues, will be placed on reflection on the work of a psychologist with people who commit crimes, punishing and the execution of criminal penalties. Classes will have a discussion character, based primarily on the active participation of students.

The aim of the lecture is to indicate specific nature of psychology in reflecting upon the phenomenon of altruism as well as to present various theoretical approaches and the relevant results of research on altruism and pro-social behaviour.

The lecture will present a new perspective in psychology that concentrates on the dynamics and change of social and psychological processes. This approach is treating psychological phenomena as processes that can be studied by empirical methods and computer simulations.

The main aim of the course is to familiarize students with the theory and practice of methods allowing to measure the different aspects of affect. In the first block of the course students will be presented with theories describing the affective experiences, with the emphasis on the dimensional theories, constituting an explanation for the structure of emotions. The second block will be dedicated to the various empirical methods of measuring the affect.

Modern philosophical counseling, is related to ancient psychagogy (self-direction of the soul). It is a philosophical discipline that applies philosophical thinking and conversation to solve individual problems. >>Life calls man to think. Philosophizing can give life direction, but it cannot replace life. The practicing philosopher learns to know himself in order to later help others explore, explain, express, and understand the philosophical aspects of individual belief systems or worldviews. A practically oriented seminar with workshop elements, conversations, disputes, and spiritual exercises of ancient philosophers.

Each second our brain receive tones of information, most of them are processed beyond our attention and consciousness. All those information has an influence on our thought and behavior.

This course explains psychological and neurobiological mechanisms underlying those processes. 

During classes students will learn how implicit information influence emotional and cognitive processes in social context.

In antiquity, love was described as a form of madness, a powerful irrational force that overpowers a person's will (a state into which a person falls and which can bring him either bliss or perdition). Has anything changed since antiquity in our perception of love? While examining Western philosophical reflection on human sexuality, we will answer, among other questions, whether it is possible and necessary to cultivate the "art of love". In our search we will take up such topics as: friendship, love, sexual optimism and pessimism, polyamory, perversion, homosexuality, BDSM, masturbation, the harms of voluntary sex and many others. While searching for the essence of love, we will develop the valuable - and useful in the profession of psychology - skill of philosophising, i.e. intellectual flexibility, clarity of thinking and critical rationality.

Note: It is not necessary to attend Part II. of the class (although it is welcome).

The aim of this class is to present narcissism in a psychological perspective. During the seminar, we will discuss both historical concepts of narcissism (rooted in the psychoanalysis) as well as modern research from personality psychology. Students will learn various models of narcissism, its structure and measurement methods. Moreover, the correlates and conssequences of narcissism for everyday life will be presented.

The lecture is inteded for persons interested in clinical psychology.The aim of the lectures is to present mental processes that determine development and maintenance of eating disorders.

Taking other people's perspective has been defined as the individual "tendency to spontaneously adopt psychological point of view of others" or as the situationally induced "process of imagining the world from another’s vantage point or imagining oneself in another’s shoes". The course has been designed to explore the nature of perspective taking and its impact on an individual's cognitive and social functioning.
