Short description:

The subject of the activity is to convey knowledge about modern technology of database systems and geo-servers, taking into account practical elements: service, management and creation of spatial databases and sharing geospatial data in the Internet.

Full description:

The topics of the course cover theoretical and practical aspects of geoservers and spatial geodatabases. Theoretical part concerns basic concepts and terms, data models and main elements of modern database systems architecture, description of modern tools and database interfaces (including SQL language) used in the construction of geospatial databases. Practical part includes presentation of examples of elements and functions of database implementation in different systems and a description of functioning and available server tools and database clients, which are used by geographic information systems (GIS) and available on the Internet geoservers (geoportals). The course also includes examples of practical projects using the installed software geoservers and database clients. Practical classes also include the presentation of practical examples of handling: reporting and geovisualization of information based on spatial databases on the web using GIS software.

Learning outcomes:

Theoretical and practical parts of the course are an essential element in shaping the profession of contemporary geographer and are a response to the real requirements of employers. Students learn the theoretical basis and practical applications of techniques and methods of information processing on the basis of databases, assuming a large variety of levels of computer knowledge and methodology, as well as different opportunities to use the skills mastered.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Continuous evaluation - progress of work during the classes, active participation in discussions and implementation of practical activities according to the instructions; implementation of practical projects possible asynchronously with the use of remote learning platform
