Basic knowledge in humanities.

The lecture is aimed to present – in the chronological and problem related arrangement – basic phenomena in the area of folklore and history of both the Old Russian and the 18th century literature.

The purpose of the lecture is to present the fundamental – and the most representative – phenomena in the area of folklore and the history of both the Old Russian literature and the 18th century literature. The material is presented in the chronological and problem-related arrangement.

1. General issues. Regularities of the European literary history process. Periodization of the Russian literature.

2. Folklore. Features of the works. Genres. Rise of the folkloristic interest in Russia. Formation and development of the folklore studies.

3. The Old Russian literature.

A. Writing of Kievan Rus. Historical and cultural background. Translating literature. Hagiographic literature. Preaching. Apocrypha. Chronicles. The Tale of Igor's Campaign.

B. Writing of North-East Rus. Historical background. Writing of the feudal division and the Tartar captivity periods. Writing of the early Muscovy period.

C. Writing of Muscovy. Historical and cultural background. Writing of the age of Ivan Grozny. Writing of the Great Smuta period. Tales of the first half of the 17th century. The Old Russian cultural tradition and new intellectual currents in the 17th century. Schism in Russian Orthodox Church and writing of the Old Believers (protopope Avvakum and his Life). Tales of the plebeians. Symeon Polotsky and syllabic poetry. Baroque.

4. Literature of the 18th century.

A. Changes in the epoch of Peter the Great. Journalism. Tales of the epoch of Peter the Great. Lyric. Drama and theatre. Works of Feofan Prokopovich.

B. Classicism. a) Theoretical assumptions. Influence of West-European literature. Genre structure (satire, ode, tragedy, comedy, heroic and heroicomic poem, fable). Leading themes. Reform of the verses. b) Works of Antioch Kantemir, Vasily Trediakovsky, Mikhail Lomonosov and Alexander Sumarokov. Nikolay Novikov and satirical periodicals. Works of Dennis Fonvizin. Works of Mikhail Khierascov, Vasily Maikov and Ippolit Bogdanovich. Poetry of Gavrila Derzhavin.

C. Sentimentalism. Theoretical assumptions. Influence of West-European literature. Periods. Leading themes. Development of the prose genres. Development of the journalism. Works of Nikolay Karamzin and authors of his circle. Works of Alexander Radishchev. Poetry of Ivan Dmitriev.

5. Literature of the late 18th and early 19th centuries – between Enlightenment and Romanticism. Issue of the pre-romanticism. Influence of West-European literature. Institutionalization of the literary life. Literary discussions. Journalism. Prose, poetry and drama of the early 19th century.

Knowledge

− The student has well-organized detailed knowledge of the history of the Russian literature of the X-XVIII centuries (periods, trends; individual literary works, works of single authors; problems; genres),

− The student has basic knowledge of the oral folk art,

− The student knows basic literature terminology,

− The student knows contents of the readings,

− The student mentions names of the Old Russian and the 18th century literature researchers in Poland, Russia and West Europe, and relies on their works.

Skills:

− The student makes the periodization of the history of the Russian literature of the X-XVIII centuries and presents in details individual periods and literary trends,

− The student presents literary works characteristic for the individual periods and literary trends, and also puts them into a larger historical, cultural and literary context,

− The student uses correct literature terminology,

− The student possesses detailed research abilities in the analysis and interpretation of the literary works,

− The student recognizes selected quotes from the literary works of the X-XVIII centuries,

− The student has an ability to work systematically.

Social competences

− The student is aware of the role, importance and specificity of writing of the ancient periods,

− The student is aware of his responsibility for the preservation of the European cultural heritage of different periods,

− The student feels obligated to develop his own reading interests and is aware of his responsibility for the reading culture.

The student has the right to 2 unexcused absences, each subsequent one requires justification. The lecturer decides on the recognition of absence.

Exceeding excused and unexcused absences by 50% of classes may be grounds to fail the course. The conditions for passing the course on the resit exam are the same as on the ordinary of exam.

If it is not possible to conduct classroom classes, classes will be conducted using distance communication tools, most likely Google Classroom and others recommended by the University of Warsaw.
