ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 3.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Prerequisites (description):

The Student should know Spanish at the advanced level that allows her/him to read academic texts, to analyze historical writings, and take part in the discussion.

The Student should have basic knowledge about the history of conquest and colonization of America.

Short description:

The program is designed to trace the history and evolution of the Spanish language in Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as to introduce the Students to selected varieties of contemporary Spanish in the Americas, its specific grammar, vocabulary, and phonetic differences.

Full description:

The program contains both historical and theoretical information as well as the analysis of the practical examples of the use of Spanish as it is spoken in different parts of the Americas.

Classes will cover the following topics:

1. Information about the development of Spanish in the Iberian Peninsula.

2. The beginnings of Spanish in America – describing the new reality.

3. Contact with indigenous languages: bilingualism, the role of interpreters, and missionaries.

4. The Kingdom of Spain language policies in the West Indies.

5. Spanish language in the New World: documents, chronicles (excerpts).

6. General characteristic of Spanish in Latin America.

7. Various regions and zones: Spanish in the Caribbean, Mexico, Andean region, etc.

8. Africanisms and the impact of the indigenous languages.

9. Spanish in border zones: the dialects, slang (el parlache, el lunfardo, pidgin)

10. Spanish language used among the bilingual Hispanic population of the USA (Spanglish).

Learning outcomes:

KNOWLEDGE

Upon completion of the program students will be able to:

- know the basic terminology of the humanities (in particular linguistics, cultural studies, and history) K_W02

- know the basic terminology used in the description of language, culture, history, philosophy and understand its sources and applications K_W03

- have an elementary knowledge of the research methodology on culture, history, and language K_W04

- identify the Spanish language spoken in different regions; recognize the characteristic features of the Spanish language spoken in America;

- Students will have knowledge of the history, culture, and Spanish language of Latin America and the Caribbean;

- Students will have knowledge of the diversity and multi-cultural character of both Americas.

SKILLS

Upon completion of the program students will be able to:

- search, analyze, evaluate and select information, taking advantage of different sources and methods K_U01

- discuss linguistics in Spanish;

- collect linguistic data in the real world;

- put theoretical knowledge into practice;

- present arguments in the discussion on the diversity of the Spanish language

SOCIAL COMPETENCES

Upon completion of the program students will be able to:

- communicate information, ideas, problems, and solutions;

- can cooperate with others in a group accepting different roles

- are ready to use knowledge of american Spanish in their professional careers

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

The presence and active participation (unjustified absence acceptable twice only) 20%

Writing (until 10 pages in total) and oral assignments during the semester 20%

Test in the middle of the semester 30%

Final test 30%

Each test is worth 100 points (a minimum passing score 60 p.)

Both tests must be positively evaluated to receive a positive final grade.
