Brief description

Instruction about the essence and scope of the anthropogenic transformations, the methodology of their prospection and evaluation of their size. Types of transformations in the environment made by human activities, in particular in relation to the realm of inanimate nature.

These issues will be discussed at the examples of large-scale transformations, linear, in-depth geological space, minor, in situ and ex situ, changing the chemistry and environmental quality in time and space.

Getting to know the state of the environment in Poland, in the light of reports of PIOŚ and GIOŚ and the State Environmental Monitoring.

Brief description

Practicum concerns the geochemical processes occurring in selected geological outcrops. Participants will learn the basic methods of field work related to geochemical description of the environment (methodology of samples collection, analysis of mineral materials in situ, identification of hazards associated with the release of toxic elements) On the field work will be presented as issues related to the biochemical activity of microorganisms which are present in weathering zones The practices also concern the biochemical and microbiological activity in the weathering zones.

The lectures continue the presentation of important gemstones and ornamental stones from the winter semester (Gemology part 1). They discuss also organic gemstones and noble metals. Each stone is presented along with its physicochemical characteristics, value for ornamental puroposes, its origin and natural occurence, its most important deposits, as well as its market, types of cuts, methods of improving the atractiveness and of imitation, and the means of its identification.

Brief description

The course is conducted in the form of a field and laboratory practice. It includes a field course and stationary classes in some selected laboratories of the Faculty of Geology at the University of Warsaw.

During the field course, students perform technical and research activities on a rock geological section.

During full-time classes, they participate in the presentation of equipment and selected research methods in the laboratories of the Faculty of Geology. In the laboratories of WG, they prepare the research results they have collected.

Students work individually. They prepare an individual multimedial presentation or poster with substantive applications, which is the basis for passing the course.

At each stage of the students' work, lectures are conducted on an ongoing basis to supplement their knowledge and consultations.
