Summer semester 2023/24
  • Field course - 30 hours
Groups

Brief description

A general course aimed at Earth Science students who are interested in geological history of the Carpathians, in particular surface and endogenic Earth processes that formed the Tatras, Pieniny Mountains and Podhale/Spisz region.

The classes take the form of a field course. The walking trips, leading through the main structural units, with several stops in natural and artificial rock outcrops, are devoted to the study of geological evolution of the Tatras, Pieniny Klippen Belt and Podhale Basin. The participants acquire basic experience and knowledge specific to geological fieldwork in the Carpathians. Keeping a record of field observations is required; illustrated reports that are based on the record are submitted by participants after the course completion to be evaluated and graded by the instructors.

  • Monographic lecture - 30 hours
Groups

Brief description

The lectures discuss important gemstones and ornamental stones from the point of view of mineralogy. Each stone is presented along with its physicochemical characteristics, its value for ornamental puroposes, its origin and natural occurence, its most important deposits, as well as its market, types of cuts, methods of improving the atractiveness and of imitation, and the means of its identification. The historical role of the most important gemstones will also be discussed, as well as the often turbulent fortunes of the most famous gems.

Brief description

Low temperature geothermal energy (GNE) is currently undergoing intensive development, because this type of heating systems can be used even in small single-family house investments. On the other hand, GNE is one of the renewable energy sources (RES). The use of low-temperature earth heat is enabled by devices commonly known as heat pumps. As part of the course, students will gain knowledge about the processes and phenomena that affect heat transport in the earth's crust, thermomechanical properties of rocks.

They will learn the technological possibilities of obtaining geothermal energy and the potential threats they pose to the soil and water environment.

They will use the acquired knowledge in practice during the implementation of projects.

Study visits to laboratory are also planned, where they learn laboratory and field research methods for thermomechanical properties of rocks and ground.
