Brief description

Human functioning is entirely immersed in time. Temporality is such an obvious feature of our nature that it usually remains beyond the scope of consciousness. But yet our way of perceiving reality mostly stems from the adaptation to being-in-time. Temporal psychology is deals with various aspects of psychological time: from time perception, through mental time travel, to temporal aspects of the Self. In the course we discuss major theories and results associated with broadly understood psychology of time. We will also review manifestations of psychological time “hidden” in the central concepts of emotions and motivation, personality, developmental psychology and psychopathology. We will also discuss measurement techniques used in time psychology research, as well as possible applications of temporal theories.

The workshop "Psychology of time" conducted by dr hab. M. Sobol-Kwapińska, provides applied extension to the present course.

The framing effect in risky decision making is a cognitive bias described by Tversky and Kahneman (1981, 1986). It consists in the shift of the preference for risk taking depending on whether the same decision problem is formulated (i.e. framed) in gains (gain domain) or in losses (loss domain). The course is designed to discuss the nature of the framing effect, the psychological processes underlying its emergence and the factors which reduce a decision maker's susceptibility to the impact of the frames.

Modern philosophical counseling, is related to ancient psychagogy (self-direction of the soul). It is a philosophical discipline that applies philosophical thinking and conversation to solve individual problems. >>Life calls man to think. Philosophizing can give life direction, but it cannot replace life. The practicing philosopher learns to know himself in order to later help others explore, explain, express, and understand the philosophical aspects of individual belief systems or worldviews. A practically oriented seminar with workshop elements, conversations, disputes, and spiritual exercises of ancient philosophers.

Brief description

In antiquity, love was described as a form of madness, a powerful irrational force that overpowers a person's will (a state into which a person falls and which can bring him either bliss or perdition). Has anything changed since antiquity in our perception of love? While examining Western philosophical reflection on human sexuality, we will answer, among other questions, whether it is possible and necessary to cultivate the "art of love". In our search we will take up such topics as: friendship, love, sexual optimism and pessimism, polyamory, perversion, homosexuality, BDSM, masturbation, the harms of voluntary sex and many others. While searching for the essence of love, we will develop the valuable - and useful in the profession of psychology - skill of philosophising, i.e. intellectual flexibility, clarity of thinking and critical rationality.

Note: It is not necessary to attend Part II. of the class (although it is welcome).

Brief description

Over the last half-century, film has ceased to be treated only as an aesthetic phenomenon and has begun to be analyzed as an important socio-cultural phenomenon that not only film scholars have become interested in. There have been many studies in psychology showing the role of film in psychotherapy of adults. Recently, there has been interest in the use of film not only in the context of reducing "deficits" in people, but also in a positive perspective, i.e. supporting the development of personality and strength of character, increasing empathy, and finally searching for the meaning of life. The aim of this course will be to analyze the subjectively selected films by the teacher in the latter context, i.e. broadly understood support in human mental development in its selected aspects. Students will thus not only expand their film knowledge, but will also have the opportunity to better understand their psychological development, including their own psychobiography through film.

(in Polish) Celem zajęć jest zapoznanie studentów z tematyką empirycznych badań nad świadomością.
