Brief description

The course provides knowledge about the plant cover (vegetation and flora) of northern Poland against the background of geomorphological, habitat, climatic and biotic conditions (including those related to the role of animals and fungi).

The most important topics covered include: 1) vegetation and flora versus geomorphological, climatic and habitat diversity; 2) the formation of the vegetation cover and the post-glacial history of the flora; 3) the diversity of natural forest, mire, aquatic and other natural non-forest ecosystems and their species composition; 4) succession processes in forest, mire, lake and dune ecosystems; 5) the geobotanical regionalization of Northern Poland; 6) the role of biotic factors (e.g. the influence of herbivores) in the development of plant communities.

Brief description

The course contains the most important problems of ornithology. It gives wide theoretical basis on bird adaptation to habitat and way of life, as well as many aspects of their biology, ecology, threats and methods of protection. Students should also acquire the ability to identify most common birds and their voices in the field and should be able to apply some methods in ornithological research.

General overview of plant transformation methodologies including chloroplasts transformation. Brief presentation of the scope of use of transgenic plants in many areas of human activities with a special focus of the applicability for environmental protection: (i) for enhanced biomass as an energy source and for biofuels production; (ii) for production of vaccines and farmaceutical compounds; (iii) for removal of contaminants (organics and inorganics) from soil, water and air; (iv) to reduce application of pesticides in agriculture; (v) able to grow on saline and degraded soils. Transformation with one gene and multi-gene approach. Open field tests with the use of transgenic plants; regulations. Transgenesis and cisgenesis. Cis-Genesis and grafting in plant biotechnology. Brief description

The objective of the course is to acquire the basics of professional communicating skills and to practice them. The classes are intended for students who would like to master the techniques of public presentation and improve their communication skills of various subjects, including the curricula and results of their own research projects.

We will practice two basic ways of communicating used in academic life: spoken presentation (report, lecture) and presentation poster. Emphasis will be put on quality, legibility and attractiveness of the message.
