ECTS credit allocation (and other scores): 3.00 Basic information on ECTS credits allocation principles:
  • the annual hourly workload of the student’s work required to achieve the expected learning outcomes for a given stage is 1500-1800h, corresponding to 60 ECTS;
  • the student’s weekly hourly workload is 45 h;
  • 1 ECTS point corresponds to 25-30 hours of student work needed to achieve the assumed learning outcomes;
  • weekly student workload necessary to achieve the assumed learning outcomes allows to obtain 1.5 ECTS;
  • work required to pass the course, which has been assigned 3 ECTS, constitutes 10% of the semester student load.

Short description:

This is the second part of the Basque culture course that continues after seeing the bases of Basque culture in the first semester. In this second we will focus on culture with a capital C and analyze specific expressions of Basque culture such as music, dance, literature or cinema.

Full description:

1.Basque carnivals: Pagan Carnival and Christian Carnival. from "Joaldunak" to "atorrak".

2. Traditional Basque Theater. "Maskaradakr" and "Pastoralak"

3. Basqu dances: Rituals, fights and flirting.

4. To dance you need music: history, rhythms and instruments. Alboka, txalaparta, txistu...

From classical music to punk-rock through folk.

4. Oral literature. Bertsolaritza, or Improvisation of sung poems (Basque free-style).

5. Basque literature: from Bernard Etxepare (14th century) to Bernardo Atxaga and Karmele Jaio (21st century)

7.Basque cinema. from "el mayorazgo de Basterretxe" (1920) to the 21st century.

Learning outcomes:

K_W02: knows the basic terminology of the humanities (in particular linguistics, cultural studies, literary studies, philosophy and history)

K_W03: knows elementary terminology used to describe language, literature, culture, history, philosophy, understands its sources and applications

K_W08: has basic knowledge of the cultural history of the Iberian Peninsula and Latin America

K_W10: has basic knowledge about the place of Iberian studies in the system of sciences and about its subject and methodological connections with other scientific disciplines

K_W17: has basic orientation in the contemporary cultural life of the Iberian Peninsula, Latin America and Poland

K_U04: is able to use basic theoretical approaches, research paradigms and concepts specific to linguistics, literary studies, cultural studies, philosophy and history in typical professional situations

K_U05: is able to recognize various types of cultural products relevant to linguistics, literary studies, cultural studies, philosophy and history and conduct their critical analysis and interpretation using typical methods in order to determine their meanings, social impact, place in the historical and cultural process

K_U06: has the ability to substantively argue, using the views of other authors and formulate conclusions

K_K01: Understands the need for lifelong learning

K_K06: is aware of the responsibility for preserving the cultural heritage of the studied region, country and world

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

will be based on attendance and written work on Basque topics.
