Short description:

This course provides students with a general introduction to multicultural comics and graphic novels.

Full description:

The aim of this course is to provide a general introduction to multicultural comics and graphic novels. The course is divided into two parts. During the first, we will explore the concept of multicultural literature. Next, we will read and analyze selected multicultural graphic narratives.

Learning outcomes:

By the end of the course, students are expected to:

1. KNOWLEDGE

- have gained basic knowledge about multicultural comics;

- be aware of the differences/similarities between comics and graphic novels;

- have read and analyzed selected multicultural comics and graphic novels;

- have read and discussed a number of academic texts devoted to comics;

- be familiar with the basic vocabulary of comics.

2. SKILLS

- be able to use their theoretical knowledge to analyze multicultural works of sequential art;

- be able to outline the most common themes and issues explored in multicultural graphic literature.

3. COMPETENCES

- be able to work individually and in a group;

- be able to participate in group and class discussions;

- be able to formulate their own opinions.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

The final grade is based on the following:

- participation (50%);

- in-class writing assignment (50%).
